Outlier On Air | Interviewing Founders, Disruptors, & Mavens

"Keep things as simple as possible"

Self-proclaimed "plant geek", Braden Hancock discusses his crowd funding strategy in a non-metropolitan area. One of the challenges with launching his Indiegogo campaign was that a large part of the community he is trying to reach is not necessarily familiar with the concept of online fundraising. A solution to this challenge was to launch his fundraiser with a live event. Somehow in the midst of the discussion there is talk of cockroach spotlighting, just saying.

Highlights:

  • Crowd-funding
  • IRS Exemptions
  • Fundraising
  • Indigogo vs kickstarter
  • Getting News Coverage
  • Elevator Pitch

Take Away

"Sometimes it's better to let go". Don't get so fixated on something that you lose sight of what really matters.

"How far can I push this?"

This interview is loaded! Seriously, check out the highlights on this one for a glimpse into the things Brandon Kennington shares with Outlier on Air. Outlier initially wanted to interview Brandon because he was a successful inventor and we felt like he could give valuable insight to creating, patenting, and marketing a new product. However, this interview exceeded our expectations.

So, most of us do not hold a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue like Brandon has, but there are many out there who get married and then buy a puppy together, right? I know I did. Brandon briefly tells us the story of how his successful Porch Potty came to be, but then he gets right down to business. According to Brandon, his greatest accomplishment was creating the system that makes his invention a success. Success is in the system.

Highlights:

Selling products through catalogs like SkyMall

Automating/Creating and scaling systems

Should you work for a corporation for awhile?

Pricing experiences and strategy

Why you shouldn't be scared of the competition

Patents - Unique explanation and strategy

Provisional patent versus utility patent

MVP -Minimum Viable Product

When to get financing

Cautions against retail

Steps to selling directly to the consumer

Perceived Value

Premium products

Valuing yourself

Cost per acquisition

Product Fulfillment

Is it possible to scale without hiring?

Take Away

Be interested in everything. Anything is possible, if it's not it will be in 6 months! The hardest part is starting, then just keep moving forward.

"A vision without traction is merely a hallucination" - Jeffery E. Garten, The Mind of a CEO

Craig Andrews starts us off talking about pie. That's a pretty sweet way to start. It is apparent that Craig is a master of creating processes, even in this podcast, because he supplies charts, lists, analogies, tests, and catchy phrases. We also find that he is the king of business acronyms! Here are a few he mentions:

IDS -ing : Identification Disscussion Solve SBA: Shared By All KIS: Keep It Simple FBA: Followed By All

Here is how Craig cuts his pie, slice by slice:

Slice 1: Vision -United Core Values Slice 2: People Component Slice 3: Data-Getting past the subjective Slice 4: Issues List - Get good at solving problems Slice 5: Processes -Consistency Slice 6: Traction

After getting a taste of pie, Craig suggests that you ponder these questions:

  1. Do you have established Core Values?
  2. What is the niche of the business and what are you trying to achieve?
  3. What is the ten year target?
  4. What is the market strategy for this business?
  5. What is the three year picture?
  6. What is the one year picture?
  7. What are those quarterly "rocks" (Thing you HAVE to get done each quarter)?
  8. Have you made an issues list?

Highlights:

  • Systems
  • Processes
  • Organisational culture
  • Core Values
  • Hiring System
  • Infographics

"It's not weakness, it's just not the best leverage of my gifts"

Is this guy really lucky or is he on to something? Take a listen and get to know Brad and how he went from being broke to flying on a private plane and bringing in 4 million dollars worth of deals, all within 30 days. Seriously, how does that happen?! Brad says, "I was crazy, almost reckless...It probably was reckless, but worth it."

Brad has created his own ideology centered around understanding yourself and creating value. Oftentimes we all get caught up in our business, but do we step back to genuinely understand ourselves? Brad Harker is writing the book on this topic, literally. Look out for his book to come out soon because I would wager to say that a guy with $400 million in career sales knows a thing or two about finding a successful niche, and that's worth reading.
