Outlier On Air | Founders, Disruptors, & Mavens (general)

Kay became a published journalist, writer and researcher when she was 11-years-old; since then, her work has been featured by Guardian, Huffington Post, The Tab, Cannabis Industry Journal, Variety, and more. In 2015, Kay graduated from Plymouth University with BA Honors in Geography, and moved to California as a social science specialist. Most of Kay’s work is held under NDA for her academic, business, nonprofit, and political clients.

Originally from Wales, she watched her hometown succumb to unmitigated social decline. Now faced with trends forecasting the devolution of California into an open-air prison camp, Kay isn’t going to sit idly by and let the propaganda overtake the data. She’s here to set the record straight because Los Angeles and other metropolitan cities can still be saved.

If you smoke cannabis, wear clothes, read magazines, or watch music videos, you’ve likely seen Kay featured by leading brands, artists, and creative directors who align with her disruptive approach to solving humanitarian crises… oh, and she gets along with everyone if they let her.

ELEANOR BENNETT:

Eleanor is an independent podcast producer and radio journalist. She was captivated by the medium while working the 6AM shift at her college radio station. From there, she moved to New York, where she covered issues of climate justice and women’s empowerment for SiriusXM Radio.

She recently finished a project, interviewing hundreds of eclectic and colorful New Yorkers for an interactive audio-visual installation at the Brooklyn Museum by the photographer and street artist, JR. The exhibition, The Chronicles of New York City, is a giant mural of over one thousand New Yorkers that is accompanied by Eleanor’s audio recordings of each person’s story. Making these kinds of personal connections with a diversity of people and creating empathic spaces for them to tell their stories fuels her work.

Eleanor is delighted to be back home in the Rocky Mountains producing Gen Z Tea, a new podcast – by teens for teens – from Aspen Public Radio. Each episode, local teens talk with Instagram influencers, social justice activists, mental health app creators, and even politicians on the campaign trail to get the “hottest tea” on how their generation is using social media to change the world.

Her latest endeavor is Questions I’ve Never Asked, a mother-daughter podcast about the taboo conversations we rarely have with our parents, grandparents and elders. The story begins with her mother’s unorthodox childhood growing up on a vast cattle station alongside the Pitjantjatjara Aboriginal community in the remote Australian outback. As a young woman, Eleanor is determined to develop a new canon of work from the perspective of women from all walks of life.

JANIE JOSELAND BENNET:

With no exaggeration, Janie has lived a unique life. The daughter of an Australian film star and a rugged, pioneering cattleman, she was raised in Australia’s remote outback as the sister to three older brothers. Growing up, her primary playmates were the children of the Pitjantjatjara tribe, who lived on the vast-land with her family and whose ancient language she spoke fluently. She was destined for an unorthodox journey!

Janie won an Australian equestrian championship (beating a field of men decades older), trained international polo ponies, and eventually traded in her little egg-yellow car to buy a round-the-world airline ticket. As a just-arrived 20 year-old in New York City, she landed a job with Fashion Week icon Fern Mallis. Later, in Aspen, she worked with acclaimed National Geographic photographers and launched Photographers Aspen, their international photo agency. Along the way, she was a contributing force behind the Oscar-winning film, Born Into Brothels, among other global photo projects.

She has lived and raised her daughter here in Aspen alongside her husband, former Aspen mayor John Bennett. (And if you know Janie really, really well, she might give you a nip of her homemade gin or even someday take you mushrooming in the wild. ....But don't count on it!)

With a career marked by a record of smashed sales expectations for some of the most successful podcast networks in the industry, Allyson brings a rare combination of deep industry experience and expertise along with vast monetization success to Lipstick & Vinyl.

Allyson has helped pioneer the Podcast industry

Well before juggernauts like “Serial” introduced the medium to broader audiences, she and her colleagues had it figured out. While at Midroll, Allyson was instrumental in breaking new ground to define what have now become the industry standards for podcast advertising and monetization.

Allyson has generated over $90 million in radio and podcast advertising revenue over the course of her career.

Lipstick and Vinyl believes that content and sales teams must collaborate- working in formation to provide additive monetization solutions that benefit creators, listeners and brands.

Lipstick and Vinyl is devoted to respecting the intimate relationship between listener and podcaster. Podcast advertising transcends traditional media placements and invasive commercials in favor of authentic endorsements indistinguishable and inseparable from core content.

As an advocate for underrepresented voices, Allyson crafts successful partnerships between brands and creators that are both authentic and performant advertising solutions.

Allyson and the team at Lipstick and Vinyl will walk through fire to ensure every show on their network has the monetary and creative resources to connect with listeners.

Amy Morin is a licensed clinical social worker and lecturer at Northeastern University. She's also in international bestselling author. Her books, 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do and 13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don't Do, have been translated into 30 languages. She gave one of the most popular TEDx talks of all time with more than 6.5 million views. Her advice has been featured by media outlets around the globe ranging from CNN in Mexico to MTV in Finland.

In today’s increasingly complicated and scary world, do children lack the flexibility and mental strength they need to cope with life’s challenges? With “safe spaces” and “trigger warnings” designed to protect kids, many adults worry that children don’t have the resilience to reach their greatest potential. In 13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don’t Do Amy Morin identifies the tools that adults—parents, teachers, and other mentors—need to become mental strength trainers.

After her blog post on mental strength went viral in 2013, psychotherapist Amy Morin expanded those ideas in her internationally bestselling book 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do. Now, in her highly anticipated follow up, 13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don’t Do (William Morrow; September 19, 2017; ISBN: 9780062565730) Amy Morin turns her focus to teaching parents how to raise mentally strong and resilient children in an everchanging world.

As a foster parent, psychotherapist, and expert in family and teen therapy, Amy draws upon her professional and personal experiences in 13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don’t Do. And while other books tell parents what to do, Amy teaches parents what “not to do,” which she says is equally important in raising mentally strong kids.

Lindsay’s goal is to provide hungry fans with trustworthy reviews, awesome recommendations, and stellar recipes, sure to inspire and satisfy the inner foodie in you. Lindsay is a currently a prospect for the new Food Network show Guy’s Big Project.

She writes for Atlanta Eats TV and manages her popular blog, The Hunger Diaries! Lindsay says: “My main life obsession is with food. I grew up with a mother that only cooked delicious meals, and had the appetite of two teenage boys. I started a career in Real Estate, but ditched it because it wasn’t my passion. I then decided to pursue/create my own job through food blogging. Thus far, I have done well at honing my food photography skills, I’ve done a bunch of writing and reviewing of restaurant dishes, and have filmed myself talking about/doing tons of foodie things.”

“My ultimate goal in life is to be a weirder, crazier Rachael Ray. I want to be a trusted figure in the food world and a food personality. I want to go around the world trying food and telling everyone what I think of it. I really can’t think of a better way to spend my life. Other than eating and telling everyone about it, my family is the most important thing in my life. I consider great friends family as well. Without them, I would never be where I am today. I also love cats and have a fat one. His name is Oliver, and he is my favorite/only child.”

TRANSPLANTS is a comedy about a guy and a girl (friends) who relocate from New York City to Los Angeles and utterly fail to adapt to their new environment. Each episode deals with a new challenge that the average New Yorker is thrown by once setting foot on dusty LA soil, including the definition and appropriate time table for brunch, finding an apartment when it appears every broker is on a life long vacation, and transportation in the world's least sensibly planned city. Pointing fun at New York and LA with an emphasis on the latter, audiences will adore Bri and Trey's endearing ridiculousness as they navigate new territory.

"I set my intention every morning" - Megan Driscoll

Megan Driscoll - Founder & CEO

Megan Driscoll graduated from the University of Chicago with the intention of starting in finance. She got wind of a paid internship with Edelman PR and applied for no other reason than she was in need of work. However, when she received formal offers from both Edelman and Merrill Lynch on the same day, Megan went with Edelman.

After completing the Edelman internship, Megan accepted positions of increasing responsibility with mid-size and large PR firms, gaining exposure and knowledge of the health care space. She grew from managing accounts to becoming a Senior Account Executive, working directly with clients to shape their corporate image and public messaging. She developed strong relationships with those clients, some of whom she still works with to this day. She had taken on a much bigger, hands-on role than she previously thought possible.

Megan learned how to serve clients, and how to develop and host events. She had a role in everything that went on. As her career in PR grew, Megan learned the skills of actually running a business, and she was part of the decision making process on staffing, billing, and other management decisions.

Megan was recruited to become president of Behrman Communications, a role in which she managed agency operations, mentored staff, recruited new business, and provided strategic advisement to clients. The responsibilities of the role gave her valuable experience, but Megan wanted to put her energies to work for her own shop. She left Behrman and started EvolveMKD.

Megan gave a lot of thought to how she wanted to craft her own agency. She looked around the industry and realized that no agency was offering the senior-level, hands-on, personalized attention in the health care and beauty space that she knew she could provide. Nor was there one that was owned, run, and staffed entirely by women. Megan seized this opportunity to try an experiment in both client service and employee retention, by focusing on senior level staff first, and combining that with a flexible and healthy working environment that is not a mainstay in the public relations world.

Coming up with the finances and access to credit to get started was a challenge. Megan needed operating capital to pay staff and cover the basic business functions until she could get some revenue coming in, but it was difficult to ascertain just how much and when. She and her husband poured their own savings into the venture. They also gave over half of their home as office space for Evolve HQ when it opened for business.

Under Megan’s leadership, Evolve has grown to 18 employees with a near-perfect retention rate. It finished 2015 with $3.4 million in revenue, and is currently serving 20 brands. Megan is looking to expand into the Asian and Hispanic markets, and her focus remains on brands, services, and products that impact women’s lives in a positive way, whether that be in the health care, beauty, or lifestyle space.

Megan worked hard to establish a company culture that encourages growth and communication. Evolve, by design, is an open office that encourages the free flow of communication among staff. Everyone, including senior staff, operates in a wide open bullpen, and all are encouraged to keep the lines of communication open. From a managerial perspective, Evolve’s policy is to encourage consistent and informal management-staff interaction to keep the lines of communication open and foster ideas and creativity.

Megan remains focused to growing Evolve and expanding its reach in the health and beauty space. Through the success of her company, she has been able to engage in helping women advance their careers. She likes to share her story and how she has overcome the challenges of being a female entrepreneur in order to help empower other women to pursue their goals. She has also made philanthropy and giving back to the community a cornerstone of Evolve’s business.

Ep 371: Sarah Pottharst Interview - Per Vigore

"I care about my work and who it impacts." - Sarah Pottharst

Sarah Pottharst - Founder/Designer, Per Vigore

The brand is called Per Vigore. The idea came out of the need for clothing that is insect-repellent but also wearable for normal "everyday" schedules. Since there is an immediate concern surrounding Zika (which currently has no cure) and its severe effects on pregnant women, the brand is launching its first line with styles that are fluid between a broad range of sizes and shapes. In this way, the designs are truly transitional.

The silhouettes are draped in such a way that they will continue to flatter the woman's body throughout various phases in life, thus providing an elegant fit for both expectant and non-expectant women alike. With this special tailoring, a garment can achieve a fuller lifecycle and positively prove its worth. With 100% cotton fabrications from Como and production based in Tuscany, the styles are perfectly crafted by the same expert hands that have also created clothing for the most highly regarded Italian designers of our time. The clothes are meant to provide dual aspects: protection and a classic tailored fit. These two aspects allow our customers to live a life of health, energy, vitality, and of course, confidence in style. These clothes are quite truly For Vigor of those who wear them.

Ep 368: Tyler Barstow Interview - Vinyl Me, Please

"It takes tine to grow what you hope is a quality company." - Tyler Barstow

Tyler is a co-founder of Vinyl Me, Please and currently serves as their Head of Content. While working on the idea for, and early stages of, Vinyl Me, Please, he worked as a Support Agent at CoSupport in Chicago. Prior to that he worked with a non-profit in Raleigh, NC.

"Vinyl Me, Please is a record of the month club. The best damn record club out there, in fact.

Our mission is help people explore, experience, and enjoy music on a deeper level. A tall order, maybe, but it’s what gets us out of bed every morning with a thunderous shout. We do that both by sending you great music every month and by making sure you have a ton of fun each step of the way. Music is important, and so are you, and we work our asses off to make sure we do good by both.

We believe in the power of the album as an art form. That music is a form of connection. That an album isn’t just something you own, but something that becomes a part of you. And we offer a full sensory experience that encourages you to deeply connect with the music you’re listening to. Vinyl is a tangible representation of the music you love, and brings with it a ritual you shouldn’t live without. What you listen to and how you listen to it matters. It ends up being an essential part of who you are."

Ep 345: Cam Kashani Interview - The Godmother of Silicon Beach

"Invest in yourself and much as you possibly can." Cam Kashani

Cam Kashani - Founder of CoAccel

Cameron Kashani (Cam) is the Godmother of Silicon Beach. She's a single mom to twin four year old boys, an Expert Speaker with US State Department, 3x founder, Special Advisor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship to US Ambassador and US Embassy Kuwait, on the Innovation Council for SoCal FWD.us, and Advisor for the Bixel Exchange. Cam accelerates the success of Entrepreneurs, and builds startup communities around the world in order to promote world peace and innovation. To date, shes worked with 4000+ Entrepreneurs and 650+ startups. She also has her MBA in marketing and entrepreneurship. Cam is a strong believer in the human element of business, and her vision is a global economy that thrives on a “WE" dynamic. People + Profit.

She began her career as the Director of Marketing of Advanced Sleep Medicine Services, Inc., (ASMS) acquired in 2010. She increased revenues by 60% through a combination of sales, marketing strategy, rebranding, content creation, but mostly, the human element — by implementing the why. The culture shifted, as did productivity and profits.

She left to start her own startup, which was a brutal failure. Though from that failure, spawned the concept of Coloft. In 2010, She cofounded Coloft, the first coworking space in Los Angeles geared towards technology startups and entrepreneurs. During her four years there, Coloft had over 1400 alumni, including Uber LA, Instacart, Fullscreen, Lootcrate and so many more.

After a prolonged divorce from her husband and business partner, she ultimately also parted with Coloft. It wasn’t an easy process, but through her own life lessons she found the need to help individuals accelerate themselves, and detach from their product.

Her newest venture, CoAccel, is the first Human Accelerator, bringing the concept of startup accelerators to a new level, directing energy and focus around the most important piece of the puzzle: the human.
